Tibet

Home of the Himalayas, ancient cultures, and world-famous trekking routes including Everest and Annapurna.

About Tibet

Perched on a high-altitude plateau averaging over 4,000 meters above sea level, Tibet is a land where raw Himalayan landscapes meet profound spiritual traditions. Sheltered behind the snow-capped Himalayan range, its unique identity is shaped by its deep-rooted Buddhist heritage, high-altitude cuisine, and sacred geography.

Lhasa: The Spiritual Heart

Lhasa (meaning “Place of the Gods”) serves as the historical, cultural, and religious center of Tibet. Nestled in a sunny river valley, this vibrant city bridges ancient traditions with local life.

  • Potala Palace: The iconic UNESCO World Heritage site and traditional winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas, standing majestically atop Red Mountain.
  • Jokhang Temple: Considered the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism, housing the revered Jowo Rinpoche statue.
  • Barkhor Street: A bustling pilgrimage path encircling Jokhang Temple where devotees perform kora (circumambulation) alongside vibrant local markets.

Tastes of the Plateau

To thrive in the cold, thin air, traditional Tibetan food focuses on energy-dense staples:

  • Tsampa: Roasted barley flour kneaded with butter tea into filling dough balls—the quintessential Tibetan staple.
  • Po Cha (Butter Tea): A savory blend of black tea, churned yak butter, and salt that keeps body heat up and lips protected from dry winds.
  • Momo & Thukpa: Flavorful steamed meat or vegetable dumplings (momo) and piping-hot noodle soups (thukpa) enjoyed daily across the plateau.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (Mar–May): Clear views, blooming rhododendrons

Autumn (Sep–Nov): Best overall trekking season

Winter (Dec–Feb): Quiet trails at lower altitudes

Monsoon (Jun–Aug): Lush landscapes, fewer crowds
