The Core Significance

Located in the southwest plains of Nepal, Lumbini is universally revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) in 623 B.C. It is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites in Buddhism, capturing his birth, while the others mark his enlightenment, first sermon, and death.

 Historical Landmarks

• Mayadevi Temple: The spiritual epicenter built over the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth. It houses ancient brick structures and the sacred Marker Stone.
• The Ashoka Pillar: Erected by the Indian Emperor Ashoka during his pilgrimage in 249 B.C., this sandstone pillar holds a Brahmi inscription that officially proved to modern archaeologists that this was the historical birthplace of the Buddha.

• Puskarini Pond: The sacred pool where Queen Mayadevi took a ritual bath before giving birth and where the infant Buddha had his first purification bath.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Lumbini operates under a master plan featuring a Monastic Zone where no shops or hotels are allowed. Instead, countries from all over the world (including Germany, China, Thailand, and South Korea) have constructed their own beautifully designed national monasteries and gompas to honor their respective Buddhist traditions.
